Half hard means the metal is soft enough to bend easily but hard enough to hold its shape.

Use it for wrapping and coiling techniques or for making spirals or for structural work. Half hard wire is great for making jewelry findings and other shapes. It retains a sharp bend nicely and has a good ‘spring-like element that is needed of certain findings. The square wire has four flat sides and is used for most of the similar things that round wire is used for such as making jewelry findings, spirals, wire wrapping or forming. It is excellent for bundling wires because square wires sits nicely side by side and stay in place as they are bundled. This technique is possible with round wire but is much more difficult because the wires tend to slip past each other.
