A: There are a couple of reasons why most jewellers prefer fine silver for bezel wire. First, the melting temperature of fine (.999) silver is higher than that of sterling (and much higher than any solder you would use), so any subsequent soldering around the bezel isn't likely to melt it. Second, because it's ostensibly "pure" (.999), there is no copper content like the 7.5% usually found in sterling, so there is less oxidation that happens while soldering (so less flux is needed, etc.). Third, fine silver is a little softer than sterling, so it's much easier to push over onto your stone once you're setting.
